Coconut Oil for Soft Hair
When my hair is feeling rough, dry, and brittle, I reach for my coconut oil. Now that I am growing out my naturally curly hair, I experience that feeling often. I love my curls, but I much prefer curls that are soft and silky.
There are two ways I use coconut oil for soft hair. I use coconut oil before shampooing or during deep conditioning. Sometimes I do both when I’m coconut oil happy. 😉
Before washing, I apply coconut oil to my hair first. After separating my hair into 4 to 6 sections, I apply coconut oil from my roots to the ends of my hair.
My favorite type of coconut oil for both pre-pooing and deep conditioning is unrefined organic. Since this kind of coconut oil turns solid at cooler temperatures, I melt it down to a liquid first. I would not recommend using a microwave. Setting your jar of solid coconut oil in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes should work just fine.
Adding coconut oil to my hair before shampooing not only protects my hair from excessive dryness but it also strengthens my hair. Minimal breakage is always a good thing!
I place a heating or shower cap over my hair and allow the coconut oil to sit for at least 15 minutes. If I have ample time, I leave the coconut oil in my hair over night and wash my hair in the morning. This gives me the softest results.
The Deep Condition
Since coconut oil is rich in hair nourishing vitamins, it makes a perfect complement to my favorite deep conditioner. Coconut oil also gives my deep conditioner more “slip”. This means that my deep conditioner and coconut oil mix is slippery, which helps with detangling my kinky curls! 🙂
My usual deep conditioner to coconut oil ratio is 2:1. So if I use 1/2 cup of deep conditioner, I will add about 1/4 cup organic coconut oil. This sounds like a lot of product for one deep conditioning session but I have a bit long and very thick hair. So this usually does the trick. If you have shorter hair or prefer to use less product, than customize this ratio as you like.
Similar to how I apply coconut oil during my pre-poo treatment, I apply the coconut oil deep conditioning mix. My preference is to cover my hair with a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for at least 20 minutes. Again, if I have more time, I will leave it on my hair for longer (without heat).
After rinsing and styling I find that my hair is so incredibly soft. Additional benefits include hair growth, less frizz and a healthier scalp.
Coconut oil for soft hair is my favorite way to go. However, there are other oils that will promote softness and strength. So if you are allergic to coconut oil or simply not a fan, no worries.
Extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and grapeseed oil are also great for pre-poo and deep conditioning treatments. Depending on the oil you may need to adjust your deep conditioning ratios.
