Herb Infused Oils for Hair and Skin

Herb Infused Oils for Hair and Skin

Herb infused oils is my next stop on the journey to healthy hair and skin.

I did some research to find oils that promotes hair growth and decided to infuse those oils with herbs that also promotes hair growth.

My hair thrives on coconut oil, castor oil, and olive oil. My skin loves castor oil, rose hip oil, and ylang ylang essential oil. So why not infuse these fabulous oils with amazing herbs?

I headed to my local Fresh Thyme market and purchased dried lavender, rosemary, sage, fenugreek, and ginger. All of these herbs have been credited for sparking hair growth and healthy skin.

Keep in mind that infusing oils takes time. There are boiling methods to infusing oil, but I decided to exercise patience and allow the infusion to take its time.

Therefore, this blog post is part one. I will publish a part two and three to reveal my results through out the summer. I am a true believer that sometimes you have to allow time for even natural ingredients to work their wonders.

I found these small mason jars at my local Dollar Tree. They’re so adorable. 🙂 But any glass jar, preferably a dark color glass, should work just fine.

There are many infused oil recipes that can be crafted. For my skin oil I choose lavender with carrier and essentials oils that I believe will work great to moisturize and heal and the skin.

For hair growth, I choose to infuse a blend of coconut oil, castor oil, and almond oil with sage, rosemary, ginger, and fenugreek. Again, these herbs are accredited for promoting hair growth and possibly preventing hair loss.

To start I am making small batches of infused oils. I will try them individually (for scalp massages, hot oil treatments, and additions to my hair conditioners) for a few weeks each to see if there is one infused oil that works best.

If all goes well, I will make larger batches of infused oils and add them to my lip balms and whipped butter recipes. Leave me a comment below if you would like me to share a few of those recipes.

The herbs will steep in a dark cool place for about six weeks. Patience is key. I am so excited to use them throughout the summer. So make sure you subscribe to my monthly newsletter and watch for updates and new infused oil recipes!

Coconut Oil for Soft Hair

Coconut Oil for Soft Hair

When my hair is feeling rough, dry, and brittle, I reach for my coconut oil. Now that I am growing out my naturally curly hair, I experience that feeling often. I love my curls, but I much prefer curls that are soft and silky.

There are two ways I use coconut oil for soft hair. I use coconut oil before shampooing or during deep conditioning. Sometimes I do both when I’m coconut oil happy. 😉

The Pre-poo

Before washing, I apply coconut oil to my hair first. After separating my hair into 4 to 6 sections, I apply coconut oil from my roots to the ends of my hair.

My favorite type of coconut oil for both pre-pooing and deep conditioning is unrefined organic. Since this kind of coconut oil turns solid at cooler temperatures, I melt it down to a liquid first. I would not recommend using a microwave. Setting your jar of solid coconut oil in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes should work just fine.

Adding coconut oil to my hair before shampooing not only protects my hair from excessive dryness but it also strengthens my hair. Minimal breakage is always a good thing!

I place a heating or shower cap over my hair and allow the coconut oil to sit for at least 15 minutes. If I have ample time, I leave the coconut oil in my hair over night and wash my hair in the morning. This gives me the softest results.

The Deep Condition

Since coconut oil is rich in hair nourishing vitamins, it makes a perfect complement to my favorite deep conditioner. Coconut oil also gives my deep conditioner more “slip”. This means that my deep conditioner and coconut oil mix is slippery, which helps with detangling my kinky curls! 🙂

My usual deep conditioner to coconut oil ratio is 2:1. So if I use 1/2 cup of deep conditioner, I will add about 1/4 cup organic coconut oil. This sounds like a lot of product for one deep conditioning session but I have a bit long and very thick hair. So this usually does the trick. If you have shorter hair or prefer to use less product, than customize this ratio as you like.

Similar to how I apply coconut oil during my pre-poo treatment, I apply the coconut oil deep conditioning mix. My preference is to cover my hair with a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for at least 20 minutes. Again, if I have more time, I will leave it on my hair for longer (without heat).

After rinsing and styling I find that my hair is so incredibly soft. Additional benefits include hair growth, less frizz and a healthier scalp.

coconut oil for soft hair

Coconut oil for soft hair is my favorite way to go. However, there are other oils that will promote softness and strength. So if you are allergic to coconut oil or simply not a fan, no worries.

Extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and grapeseed oil are also great for pre-poo and deep conditioning treatments. Depending on the oil you may need to adjust your deep conditioning  ratios.

What are top tips for achieving soft hair? I’d love to hear about them and try them out myself. 🙂

How Do You Use A Lotion Bar

Piping Rock – Herbs, Supplements, Essentials Oils and more… Always the best for less!

How do you use a lotion bar do lotion bars expireHow Do You Use a Lotion Bar?

Over the last few years I have fallen in love with the lotion bar. I saw one for the first time on YouTube.

As a matter of fact, there are many tutorials on how to make your own lotion bar. Unfortunately, many of those posts and videos never get into the details of, how do you use a lotion bar.

I know. It’s not rocket science. Still the benefits of using an organically made lotion bar for your skin far surpasses the synthetic creams in a bottle. That is my opinion of it anyway. 😉

Lotion bar ingredients can include any combination of butters and oils. For my Coconut Beauty Lotion Bars, I love to use Shea and cocoa butters. They are also made with organic unrefined oils like coconut, avocado, grapeseed, and rose hip.

A lotion bar can be made in various shapes and sizes. I personally am a fan of a smaller round bar. A larger lotion bar that may resemble a bar of soap is wonderful for easy application to your total body.

How do you use a lotion bar?

Larger Coconut Butter Lotion Bar

The easiest way is to simply take the bar in your hand and rub it up and down against your skin. You can do this for your total body. Your body heat will allow the solid lotion to slowly melt into your skin.

For your hands, you can massage the bar into the palm and back of your hands. Again, your body heat will melt the outer layer of the bar into your skin. Then set the bar aside and rub your hands together.

You can use a lotion bar to moisturize the driest areas of your body. Give your feet, knees, and elbows extra care by focusing your lotion bar in those areas. This may be the season to change from sandals to boots, but preventing dry cracked heels all year long is a must.

When using a Coconut Beauty lotion bar, you will notice softer skin that is moisturized from the inside out. This is because we use natural ingredients that penetrate the skin.

A lotion bar can also be used to moisturize your cuticles. Gently massage a lotion bar along your How do you use a lotion bar 2nails. Lotion bars made with coconut oil can help make your nails stronger and keep your cuticles soft.

Lotion bars are also perfect for traveling. They are handy, compact, and easy to pack. Even a smaller lotion bar can be used from head to toe, and it takes ups little space in a shower or make up bag.

If making your own lotions, you can use a variety of essential oils to create your own favorite fragrance. You can keep it natural without compromise.

Be sure you check out my vegan lotion bar made with no beeswax!

Do Lotion Bars Expire

Lotion bars have been around for quite sometime but the concept of solid lotion is still new to some. Do lotion bars expire, is one of the leading questions for new solid lotion bar users.

Lotion bars are usually made with these types of ingredients: butters, oils, and wax.

My favorite ingredients to use when making lotion bars are coconut oil, cocoa butter, lavender essential oil, and beeswax. For vegans, there are other options to replace beeswax like candelilla wax.

With more people reaching for natural oils and butters in their daily beauty care routine, it is important to know how to care for these ingredients and when they expire.

The expiration date of lotion bars depends on a few variables. What ingredients are in the lotion bar? How is the lotion bar stored on a daily basis? Is the lotion bar or its container exposed to water?

Here are the most common ingredients in my lotion bars and their estimated shelf lives. Click here to see my list of oils and there general shelf life.

do lotion bars expire
Coconut Butter Solid Lotion Bar

Cocoa Butter Shelf Life – 2 to 3 years
Shea Butter Shelf Life – 1 to 2 years
Coconut Oil Shelf Life – 2 to 5 years
Beeswax Shelf Life – Indefinite
Candelilla Wax Shelf Life – Indefinite

To help preserve my lotion bars I like to use essential oils that have antimicrobial properties. Sandalwood is a favorite as well as lavender and rosemary essential oils.

These essential oils are natural preservatives that smell wonderful and enhances the use of a solid lotion bar.

To keep your lotion bar on track with the shelf life of its components, you want to store it properly. Most butters, oils, and wax are temperature sensitive. Lotion bars are better preserved when stored in a cool and dry location.

A lotion bar that is exposed to heat above room temperature for long a duration can turn rancid sooner. This can inhibit its moisturizing properties. Depending on the oil ingredients inside, exposure to hot temperatures can also inhibit its pleasant fragrance.

do lotion bars expire
1 ounce tin container

If keeping your lotion bar in a container, keep the inside of the container dry. This helps to preserve the lotion bar and keep bacteria out.

If you have large lotion bars or simply want to keep your bars exposed on your vanity or shelf, just make sure the area is dry.

So, do lotion bars expire? The short answer is yes. Essentially the lotion bars that I typically make should have a shelf life of 12 to 18 months.

If you are purchasing natural lotion bars and there is not an expiration or used by date on the package, feel free to contact the company to confirm.

However, if it is a well made lotion bar, you will likely use it up well before its expiration. I always do! 😉

SwissVita Micrite Anti-Wrinkle Serum Review

Swissvita Micrite Anti-Wrinkle Serum Review

First I must thank Swissvita for sending me this product for my review. I am so honored to be entrusted with a product that I know they are truly passionate about.

The most important question is this: Does it actually work? I am over forty and although I have no issue with being forty and fabulous, I want to maintain the health of my skin.

Before I get into what didn’t really work for me, let’s start off on a positive note.

The Pros…

The serum has a lovely creamy texture that is white in color. It makes for an awesome moisturizer without leaving a greasy feeling on your skin.

The instructions recommend a small amount for each application. A 30 gram tube of the serum will last a long time. This, plus the fact that it’s not too terribly pricey are bonuses for this product.

The SwissVita Micrite Anti-Wrinkle Serum contains a secret ingredient called AC-11. It is an Amazon rain forest herb that helps repair damaged and wrinkled skin. The ingredient stimulates natural collagen growth.

Other natural ingredients includes Vitamin B12 and osilift, a natural polyose derived from oats. These ingredients also repair and plump the skin.

The serum is free of additives, alcohol, fragrance, pigments and parabens. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin. Over the last two weeks, I have not experienced any breakouts or irritation.

The Cons…

A less problematic issue is the tube that the serum comes in. Without any pressure, the serum leaks from the tube. So after I initially opened the tube and squeezed it for the first time, it was necessary to put the cap on it again fairly quickly. This wasn’t a huge deal, since it oozes out slowly, but something to watch out for.

Ultimately I was eager to try this product for its anti-wrinkle properties. For years I have searched for a quality anti-aging product that I could actually afford. The SwissVita Micrite 3D Anti-Wrinkle Serum current sells for around $31 on Amazon. The unit price is reasonable, but the cost is still enough that I would be disappointed if it did not work well. So, did it?

Unfortunately after around two weeks of use I did not see any visible change in my fine lines. That’s not to say that my skin has not grown more youthful under the surface, but after daily inspection of my skin, there’s no visible difference.

I also like to see if my husband or anyone else notices a difference. Hearing, “Wow, your skin looks great. What are you using?” is a good sign that a serum is working. I haven’t those words just yet.

anti-wrinkle cream before and afterFinal Thoughts…

So the claim that I would see a “visible” difference in two weeks didn’t happen for me. However, SwissVita has great reviews posted on Amazon.

One thing I have learned when it comes to skin and hair care products is that what works for one person may not work for another. It doesn’t mean that the product is not good. It just so happens that this product didn’t work for me.

Perhaps after continued use, I will begin to see a noticeable difference. Until then I thank SwissVita once again for their generous gift.

Swissvita offers an entire line of skin care products: A cleansing cream, toner, skin serum, whitening serum, anti-wrinkle serum, eye cream, anti-spot serum, and all use cream.

Tea Tree Oil in Shampoo

Do I Put Tea Tree Oil In Shampoo

Do I put tea tree oil in shampoo?Tea Tree Oil in Shampoo

The short answer to this question is, yes. Essential oils can be life savers for shampoos that come short of meeting your hair health needs. Putting tea tree oil in shampoo turns my shampoo into an excellent treatment for my scalp.

Tea tree essential oil is known for its healing and antiseptic properties. It is effective in killing bacteria and relieving dry and itchy scalp. Tea tree oil soothes dryness and removes dandruff. It is also known for treating lice.

New York Biology essential oils are 100% pure and authentic. There are no fillers or additives. It’s therapeutic grade is triple extra quality. Because of its potency and high quality, just a few drops are enough to enhance your cleansing experience.

If you have sensitive skin or will be using this shampoo on children, use less oil. Too much essential oil can irritate the skin. Quality essential oils are very effective so you do not have to add more to make it better.

Using the appropriate amount of essential oil is also cost effective. There’s no need to waste precious oils. 🙂

Watch my 2 minute video below on how I put tea tree oil in shampoo. It is super easy.

I use an 80 ml bottle. Fill half the bottle with shampoo. Add 4 to 5 drops of tea tree oil. Give your bottle a good shake and it is ready for use.

Sometimes washing my hair feels like a chore. A few drops of tea tree oil in shampoo creates a spa-like experience in the shower. The fragrance and feel of the tea tree oil is invigorating and relaxing. 🙂

Be sure to shake the bottle before each use. Sometimes the shampoo and oil separate. Then proceed to wash your hair as normal and enjoy.

Protect Your Skin With Avenir Lavender Essential Oil

Protect Your Skin With Avenir Lavender Essential Oil

My use of lavender essential oil has progressed from hair growth oil to soap making to spritzing our linens. The uses seem without limits and today I took my Avenir lavender essential oil to the park.

Summer is not officially over. Bugs are still lurking outdoors, waiting for a nibble. To avoid chemical bug repellents, I decided to try Wellness Mama’s homemade bug spray recipe. My essential oil of choice is lavender essential oil.

I mixed together water, natural witch hazel, and vegetable glycerin. Last, I added 50 drops of Avenir’s lavender essential oil. It is 100% pure and non-toxic. With this brand there are no additives or fillers.

Avenir uses steam distillation as their extraction method. The country of origin is Bulgaria.

It is now the end of the day and my bug spray worked great. Once the beautiful fragrance of the lavender oil scented the park air, nearly everyone was reaching for my bottle. 🙂 It doesn’t get any better than smelling lovely while keeping the bugs away.

Check out my video and be sure to give it a thumbs up! 😉

sandalwood essential oil lotion bars

Sandalwood Essential Oil Lotion Bars

Sandalwood Essential Oil Lotion Bars

In recent months I have become addicted to sandalwood essential oil.

The fragrance is romantic, woodsy, and sweet. I would love to add a few drops to my diffuser and snuggle in bed for days.

Sadly, I do have to leave the house for work. 🙂 So, I have found ways to take the comfort of sandalwood essential oil with me wherever I go.

One of my favorite uses for sandalwood oil are making lotion bars. A nice floral or square silicone mold creates smaller lotion bars that I can carry on the go.

Adding sandalwood essential oil to my bars makes moisturizing my skin a luxurious tweet! The fragrance is calming and sandalwood oil is wonderful for dry skin.

Using sandalwood oil in skin products is great for treating wounds and sores due to its antiseptic property. Sandalwood essential oil also has antidepressant, calming, and emollient properties.

Before we get into the lotion bar ingredients, I want to share a tip about shopping for essential oils.

Not every brand of essential oil is created equally. Therefore, look for therapeutic grade oils. If you can, find out how a company produces their oils.

Natural Sandalwood

Sandalwood essential oil is, unfortunately, not cheap. So if a price seems too good to be true, the quality of the oil may be compromised. As a result, the shelf life may be limited or the fragrance may not be quite the same.

For this recipe I used New York Biology sandalwood essential oil*. It is 100% pure and natural. It is not an “oil blend”, but 100% sandalwood essential oil.

NYB’s sandalwood essential oil is triple extra quality therapeutic grade. I never knew there was such a grade! 🙂 It is potent as having a-santalol 50.28% and b-santalol 28.3%.

You can purchase NYB’s oils on Amazon. The sandalwood oil is currently selling for $18.50 for a 1 ounce bottle. The bottle comes with a cap and a glass dropper cap.

Believe it or not, this is a fair price for sandalwood essential oil. The upside to this cost is the effectiveness and potency of this oil. Still, I would leap for joy if I could afford to purchase this oil by the gallon.

I have purchased less quality sandalwood oils before; hoping that maybe I would hit the jackpot. They did not hurt me when applied to my skin and hair, but when compared to higher grade oils, there is no comparison.

So now on to the lotion bars!

Here are the ingredients I use to make Sandalwood Essential Oil Lotion Bars! Measurements will vary depending on the size and quantity of your bars. This recipe is extremely flexible. You may substitute with other oils, butters, and waxes.

  • Coconut Oil – 2 ounces
  • Cocoa Butter – 2 ounces
  • Beeswax – 2 ounces
  • Sandalwood Essential Oil – 5 to 10 drops

You can shop for these or other materials on Amazon:

HOSL 6-cavity Plain Basic Rectangle Silicone Mould for Homemade Craft Soap Mold, cake mold, Ice cube traySandalwood Oil (Santalum Album) – 100% Pure & Natural – Triple Extra Quality Sandalwood Essential Oil a-santolol 50.28%, b-santalol 28.3% – 1 fl ozYellow Beeswax Bees Wax Organic Pastilles Beards Premium Prime Grade A 100% Pure 16 oz

Directions:

In a double boiler, slowly begin melting your beeswax and cocoa butter. After the wax and butter have melted, add coconut oil. Allow your wax, butter,  and oil to melt together. Then give your mix a good stir.

Remove the mixture from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes. Add drops of sandalwood oil and mix thoroughly.

Pour your lotion mix into a silicone mold. Allow to cool until the lotion blend hardens. You can place your filled molds into the refrigerator for a faster cooling time.

Once your lotions bars have hardened, pop them out of the mold and store in a container.

To use, massage the bar into your skin and watch the oils and butters penetrate and moisturize! The fragrance of sandalwood oil is better than any perfume I own. I love it!

Check out my post on how to use sandalwood essential oil for your hair. My husband loves this fragrance too by the way. 😉

Have you tried Sandalwood Essential Oil? How do you use it?

essential oils for pain

Essential Oils for Pain by Phytopia

Essential Oils for Pain by Phytopia

Now that I am beyond 30-something, I look to essentials for more than just beauty.

Recovery after a workout or road race is now imperative. In the past I have resorted to over the counter creams for muscle pain, but they don’t always work and often smell terrible.

10K Flying Pig

Over the last two weeks I have used Phytopia’s essentials oils for pain – Pain Away. After a run I experience leg pain. Usually it is hamstring pain and around my calves and ankles.

Running less is not going to happen anytime soon. I love the sport. It is a great way to relieve stress and stay strong.

So I now have to plan for my recovery after a long run or hard workout at the gym. If I am proactive, I can get out of bed the next day. Lol

Pain Away is part of Phytopia’s Clinical Collection. Here are the benefits!

It’s natural.

Phytopia’s essential oils for pain is 100% organic and therapeutic grade. They use top grade carrier and essential oils for their products. This is important since the oil is applied and absorbed into your skin.

Carrier and essential oils in this blend include: peppermint, sunflower, eucalyptus, lavender, and evening primrose. This oil does not contain synthetic chemicals.

To help with the shelf life, this blend is sold in a dark amber bottle. Store in a cool dry place and you’re good to go.

Unlike the medicated scent of most creams, this oil has a nice subtle fragrance. You won’t get odd stares at the gym. 🙂

Relieves pain, soreness, strain and tension.

My after-run pain usually occurs in the lower body, but for those that may suffer from back pain, cramping, or headaches, Pain Away oil offers relief.

When applying this oil to my muscles there is a cooling sensation that helps to alleviate any tension right away. This oil works best for me when applying right after a run, as the soreness is beginning to settle in.

After applying the oil I simply relax and do a little bit more stretching.

The oil releases from the bottle in small drops. With essential oils, more does not always mean better. I start with just a few drops on each leg and then massage it in.

Then maybe a few more, if aching persist. Recommended usage for children and adults is printed on the label.

Phytopia’s Pain Away comes in a 50ml bottle, so one bottle will last a long time.

The blending is already done.

Pain Away takes the guess work out of blending oils.

The appropriate quantities of each oil has been measured and tested for optimum results. And if you do not already own all of these oils, you don’t have to break the bank purchasing them individually.

I plan on distributing some of this oil to my family. If they enjoy it as much as I have, I will purchase Phytopia’s Pain Away. It is available on Amazon and currently selling for $39.99

Please note that my positive review of essentials oils for pain should not replace the advice and recommendation of your physician. If you have persistent pain or have other medical concerns, consult with your doctor.

Have you tried products from #PhytopiaUSA? Have you tried essentials oils for pain? What were your results?

Camellia Oil Face Oils

Camellia Oil Review | BeautyOils.Co

Camellia Oil Review | BeautyOils.Co

Be sure to enter our end of summer Amazon Gift Card giveaway! 🙂

Camellia Oil is one of those hidden beauty treasures that I heard very little about. I stumbled upon camellia oil while browsing the Piping Rock online store.

The description stated its benefits for the hair and skin, but I didn’t purchase that day. After all, I have other oils that will do the same thing. Little did I know that camellia oil is in a league of its own.

Camellia oil has both anti-aging properties and fights against stretch marks. It is a rich source of omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. Pure camellia oil is wonderful for all skin types including skin that is prone to acne. Because camellia oil penetrates the skin quickly, it will not leave your skin feeling or looking oily.

This is the best moisturizer I have ever used for my face. The texture of the camellia oil is extremely silky, smooth, and light.

Although camellia oil can be more expensive on the front end, you will save money over time. This oil from BeautyOils.CO comes in a 1 ounce bottle. You may shake your head at paying $8.95 for an ounce of oil. However, all you need are two drops to moisturize your entire face.

You are using less product and getting amazing results.

Other Uses for Camellia Oil

I also added it to my homemade lip balm. Doing this contributes UV protection, vitamin E, and natural antioxidants to protect and condition my lips. So far I found that camellia oil complements other oils and butters well.

Made in California

It wasn’t long before I was taking my bottle of camellia oil to treat my hair at night. It reminds me of the consistency of a dry styling oil except this oil is 100% pure.

The battle is always on when fighting dry hair and split ends. You can apply camellia oil to wet hair for conditioning. I have been applying it to dry hair focusing on the ends.

Just like the skin application, just a few drops is enough to treat your hair depending on its length.

This oil from Beauty Oils Co includes directions on how to use camellia oil. There are also instructions on how to care for your oil after purchase. The shelf life of camellia oil can be as long as 24 months if stored properly.

100% Pure

BeautyOils.Co provided this product freely in exchange for my honest review. Overall I love this oil most for my skin. Now that I am 40-something, I am happy that I found a natural product that will make my skin look and feel younger.

Would I change anything about this product? I did some additional research on camellia oil and the benefits are so much more than what I named here.

Since BeautyOils.Co has not added anything to this oil, you are getting camellia oil in its pure form. That’s tough to beat.

Camellia oil now ranks at the top of my list of oils. I look forward to seeing more benefits with continued use. You will be seeing this oil in future DIY projects! 🙂
